Getting a tattoo is only half the process. The other half, equally important, is how you care for it during the first few weeks. A great tattoo can be completely ruined if you don't follow proper care instructions, and in Cali, where climate and sun exposure are important factors, this is even more critical.
At Legassy Studio, we see too many cases where excellent work is compromised by avoidable mistakes during healing. That's why we're sharing the 7 most common mistakes that ruin tattoo healing and, most importantly, how to avoid them.
1. Not Following Studio Instructions
This is mistake number one and the most common. Each studio has its care protocol based on years of experience, the type of technique they use, and local climate. The instructions your artist gives you are not suggestions: they're essential.
Why is this a problem?
- Each studio knows how skin reacts in Cali with their specific techniques.
- Recommended products are tested and work well with the type of ink and needles they use.
- Instructions are adapted to local climate (humidity, temperature, sun exposure).
How to avoid it: Listen carefully to instructions before leaving the studio. If you have questions, ask. Many studios, including Legassy Studio, offer WhatsApp follow-up to resolve doubts during healing.
2. Using Wrong or Homemade Products
The internet is full of "home remedies" and "natural" products to heal tattoos. Most are a disaster. From toothpaste to undiluted essential oils, these products can:
- Irritate freshly tattooed skin.
- Cause allergic reactions.
- Interfere with the natural healing process.
- Make the tattoo look dull or lose definition.
How to avoid it: Use only products your studio recommends. Generally, this includes a specific tattoo cream (like Bepanthen, Aquaphor, or specialized products) and a mild neutral soap. Nothing else.
At Legassy Studio we recommend specific products because we've tested them with hundreds of tattoos in Cali. Trust your artist's experience, not internet recipes.
3. Scratching or Picking Scabs
During healing, your tattoo will itch. That's normal. It will also form scabs. That's also normal. What is NOT normal or acceptable is scratching or picking those scabs.
What happens if you do?
- Each scab you pick takes ink with it.
- You can create permanent scars.
- The tattoo can end up with "holes" where ink is missing.
- You can introduce bacteria and cause an infection.
How to avoid it: If it itches, pat gently (never scratch). If there are scabs, let them fall off naturally. If they look very thick or problematic, consult with your artist before doing anything.
4. Exposing Tattoo to Sun Without Protection
In Cali, solar radiation is intense year-round. A freshly done tattoo is extremely sensitive to sun. Exposing it directly can:
- Burn freshly tattooed skin.
- Cause ink to fade prematurely.
- Cause permanent discoloration.
- Cause scars and irregular texture.
How to avoid it: During the first 2-3 weeks, keep the tattoo completely covered with clothing when going out. After complete healing, use high SPF sunscreen (50+) whenever the tattoo is exposed. This is especially important in Cali.
5. Submerging Tattoo in Water
Showering is fine. Submerging the tattoo in stagnant water, NO. This includes:
- Swimming pools (chlorine is aggressive).
- Ocean (salt and bacteria).
- Rivers and hot tubs (bacteria and chemicals).
- Hot tubs with hot water for too long.
Why is it dangerous?
- Stagnant water contains bacteria that can infect the open wound.
- Chemicals (chlorine, salt) can irritate and damage the tattoo.
- Water softens scabs prematurely, taking ink with it.
How to avoid it: Wait at least 2-3 weeks before submerging the tattoo. Meanwhile, you can shower normally, but keep the tattoo out of stagnant water.
6. Wearing Tight Clothing or Constant Friction
Constant friction is the enemy of a healing tattoo. Wearing very tight clothing or clothing that constantly rubs can:
- Irritate the skin.
- Pull scabs off prematurely.
- Cause friction that deforms the design.
- Cause inflammation and delay healing.
How to avoid it: During the first weeks, wear loose clothing and soft materials (cotton) over the tattooed area. Avoid rough synthetic fabrics and very tight garments.
7. Ignoring Signs of Infection or Problems
Not all tattoos heal the same. Some can have complications. Ignoring warning signs can lead to serious infections and completely ruin your tattoo.
Warning signs:
- Excessive redness that worsens after 3-4 days.
- Pus or yellowish/greenish discharge.
- Fever or general malaise.
- Intense pain that doesn't improve.
- Extreme swelling.
- Unpleasant odor.
How to avoid it: If you notice any of these symptoms, immediately contact your studio or seek medical attention. Don't wait for it to "get better on its own." Tattoo infections can be serious if not treated.
Additional Tips for Perfect Healing
In addition to avoiding these mistakes, here are some extra tips to ensure your tattoo heals perfectly:
- Keep skin hydrated: Use the recommended cream in thin layers, not thick. Too much cream can clog pores.
- Clean gently: Wash the tattoo 2-3 times a day with warm water and neutral soap. Dry by patting, never rubbing.
- Avoid intense exercise: During the first week, avoid activities that cause excessive sweating or friction on the tattooed area.
- Don't use bandages after the first hours: Once you remove the initial bandage (according to your studio's instructions), don't cover it again.
