A sleeve (the full arm) or a full back piece is tattooed as a project: first the whole composition is designed, then it is worked in sessions, letting the skin heal between appointments. At Legassy Studio in south Cali the consultation is free: we help you define the idea, the style and the session plan before starting.
Realism sleeves and back pieces are among our most requested work. If you are thinking about one, this is what you should know.
First the full design, then the ink
The most common mistake in large projects is tattooing separate pieces that do not fit together later. In a well-planned sleeve:
- There is a theme or story tying everything together (for example, mythology, nature or faith).
- The figures follow the shape of the arm or back: muscles and curves guide the composition.
- Backgrounds and transitions (smoke, clouds, ornaments, flowers) connect the figures so it reads as one piece.
For example, the Poseidon sleeve in our portfolio combines the main figure with flowers that soften the transition toward the forearm.
How many sessions does a sleeve or back piece take?
There is no fixed number: it depends on the size of your arm or back, the level of detail and how long your skin can take per session. What matters is that it is planned from the start, so you know what to expect.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Consultation and design | We define the theme, style, figures and how they fit your body. |
| First sessions | The main figures and most detailed areas are laid down. |
| Middle sessions | Shading, backgrounds and transitions are completed. |
| Finish | Final adjustments so everything looks consistent. |
Healing between sessions
Between appointments the skin needs to recover. Tattooing over an area that has not healed affects the result and the health of your skin. Your artist will tell you how long to wait depending on the placement and how the previous session healed.
